The number of patients confirmed to have contracted the new coronavirus in Hungary was increased to 1,834 in the last 24 hours, with another 16 new deaths reported, according to koronavirus.gov.hu, the official government information website for the epidemic.
Most of the victims of the disease were elderly and had additional chronic problems, the government website said. Currently, a total of 12,150 people are in official home quarantine and the authorities have taken 43,901 samples. According to the portal, there are 829 patients being treated with COVID-19 in hospital, 60 of whom are on a ventilator.
The majority of cases were reported from Budapest, with 929 positive cases, and the neighbouring Pest county (264) and Fejér county (141) in Central Hungary. The smallest number was reported from Heves and Békés county with 13 cases.
The website also noted that Hungary is currently in the phase when the virus is being transmitted in small clusters as opposed to in larger communities, but it is present in all parts of the country. They also warns that the number of people carrying and contracting the virus may be significantly higher than the number of confirmed cases.
The elderly, students and people returning from abroad must stay at home, it said. Everyone must observe the curfew restrictions which the government has extended indefinitely, it added.
