Hungarian title-holder Videoton FC can consider themselves lucky not to have been knocked out of the Champion League qualification stage as Welsh champion The New Sainst FC scored the only goal in normal time in the second leg game held on Wednesday night in the Sóstói Stadion of Székesfehérvár.
The Hungarian side went in to the clash with a 1-0 lead under their belts following the first leg game with TNS, however, substitute player Matty Williams scored for TNS in the 78th minute to leave the match tied on aggregate. In the extra time Hungarian international Ádám Gyurcsó netted a right-footed shot past TNS goalkeeper Paul Harrison and send the home team into the next round to be played against Belarus side BATE Borisov.
Videoton’s French head coach Bernard Casoni said after the match that the most important thing tonight was that they managed to go through. “The club achieved a historic success. I would like to congratulate the players as they surpassed themselves with the fighting spirit”, he said. TNS manager Craig Harrison told media that it was a big result that things remained so tight during the game. “I am very proud of my team and it was a battle where we could have emerge as winners.”, he added.
