Champions League: BATE Borisov Dump Ten-Man Videoton Out Of Cup – Video!

Hungarian side Videoton FC have to settle for the 4th qualifying round of the Europa League after losing 1-0 away from home on Wednesday night against Belarus champion BATE Borisov. Since the first leg of the Champions League 3rd round qualifier clash in Hungary had produced a 1-1, the Hungarian title-holder had to score a goal in the second leg to have any chance of progressing through to the next stage.

Although Videoton did not play dangerously at all, the Hungarian team was in the tie until Dutch midfielder Luijckx got sent off for his second booking in the 59 minute. The second leg game, which delivered rather poor quality football, was settled on 82 minutes when BATE full back Zhavnrechik crossed from the right and midfielder Nemanja Nikolic headed across goal and into to the corner of the net to make the game 1-0 and the tie 2-1 on aggregate.

“We have to admit that the result was a realistic one based on the picture of the game”, Videoton’s French head coach Bernard Casoni commented on the result. “This was especially the case with BATE being better after the sending off”, he said. “The red card made the match very difficult for us. We did not really have the chance to attack once we were down to ten men, so we could not manage to score the goal that could have seen us go through”, Casoni added.

BATE Borisov manager Aleksandr Jermakovic said after the game that he was pleased whit his team’s defensive display. “I am satisfied overall. Our opponents battled until the last minute with 10 men but we managed to win the match without conceding a goal”, he said.

Although Vidi have been knocked out of the Champions League by BATE, the Hungarian side will no go to the Europe League qualification playoff with the draw taking place on Friday. On Saturday Vidi will host title rival and super cup winner Ferencváros in the 4th round of the Hungarian championship.
