Budapest100: A Chance To Visit 100-Year-Old Buildings In The Heart Of Budapest

2016.04.15.

The program series entitled Budapest100 starts on the 15th of April in the capital of Hungary. The annual event is held in celebration of the city’s 100-year-old buildings. Last year, about 20 000 visitors took part in the programs and visited the historic buildings. Within the projects, visitors can walk around the houses and enjoy various programs and lectures in connection with them.

This year, the subject of the Budapest100 will be the Nagykörút (the main boulevard). On the line of the tram 4-6, there are 252 buildings and 58 of them have already joined to the program. “Through the program, we care about that what it’s like to live on the Nagykörút, with its grocery stores, functions, parks etc.” said Mónika Kertész, curator of the Contemporary Architecture Center. She mentioned the boulevard was planned by the style of the Ring of Wien, but there were imaginations (by Ferenc Reitter) about a navigable Danube channel instead of the boulevard too.

Yellow billboards will signal the buildings taking part in the program and an information desk will be set up on Rákóczi tér this weekend. Be aware that registration is necessary for some of the programs  because of the holding capacity of the monuments.

Perhaps the Nagykörút would look like this today if the dream of Reitter Ferenc would have come true:
