What?! Budapest to New York for Under $200?

By Tom Szigeti // 2017.01.06.

According to British newspaper The Guardian, budget carrier Norwegian Air Shuttle will begin offering flights to New York for under $75 beginning this summer.

The new, low-fare routes will fly out of Cork and Shannon in Ireland, as well as from Edinburgh, Scotland.

Norwegian already has daily flights from London to New York starting at $186 one way; starting in early 2017, the number of flights will be doubled, from once daily to twice daily.

The airline also flies from Gatwick to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Puerto Rico, and Boston; one-way tickets for these flights start at roughly $170.

Discussing the new routes, Norwegian’s spokesman said:

We are working on plans for new transatlantic routes from Edinburgh and Ireland which we expect to launch in 2017, and a key part of our plans are to make sure they are truly affordable, allowing as many people as possible to fly.

A number of airports are being looked at while we finalise our plans but smaller airports in the US present us with an opportunity to offer some ground-breaking fares to passengers in the UK, Ireland and the US.

If bought ahead of time, flights from Budapest to London on budget airlines such as Ryanair and Wizz Air can be found for as little as $60, while a further flight to Cork or Shannon can be had for around $45; in other words, it might soon be possible to fly from Budapest to New York for under $200.
