The International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM) officially declared at its congress in Tbilisi on Sunday that Budapest had won the right to host the World Modern Pentathlon Championships in 2019.

The Laser-Run World Championships, an updated taken on the Pentathlon which has become a highlight of the calendar since its debut in 2015, will be held simultaneously with the UIPM Senior World Championships in Budapest.

At the same time, the 2017 UIPM Junior World Championships held in Székesfehérvár, in western Hungary was declared the best-organized event among international championships, UIPM said in a statement.

Vörös Zsuzsanna, director of the Alba Volán SC pentathlon section and vice president of Hungarian Modern Pentathlon Association, argued that cooperation would be key to the success of the event.

“The triple cooperation between the Hungarian Modern Pentathlon Association, the municipal government of Székesfehérvár and the pentathlon section of Volán Fehérvár contributed greatly to the award. They have repeatedly proved that they can organize competitions on a very high level together.” – said the pentathlon Olympic champion of Athens.

The 2019 tournament will be Budapest’s sixth time hosting the World Modern Pentathlon Championships, having already hosted the event in 1969, 1979, 1989, 1999 and 2008.
