Budapest will compete against Hamburg, Los Angeles, Paris and Rome to host the 2024 Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee said. The IOC made the announcement after the deadline for submitting host applications for the games passed at midnight on Tuesday. Hungary is the only country among the ten most successful Olympic nations that has not yet hosted the Games.
The IOC also said it would contribute 1.7 billion US dollars in cash and services to the organising committee for the Olympic Games 2024. Budapest and the Hungarian Olympic Committee sent their application to host the games to the IOC in July. The Hungarian bid is supported both by parliament and the government as Hungary’s 2016 state budget allocates 36 billion forints (EUR 12m) in support for the construction of a National Olympic Centre.
Close to half of Hungarians support the country’s bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, with political preferences having a significant influence on attitudes towards a question, a representative public opinion survey carried out between 24 and 29 July on a 1000-member sample representative revealed. Results show that 49 per cent of the population supports the idea of a Budapest Olympics, while 42 per cent are opposed to it.
