Fanni Kaszás 2019.01.21.

Following last year’s success of Budapest being voted 8th best European travel destination by European Best Destinations, the Hungarian capital is once again competing against 20 other cities for the title.

In 2018—the first year it entered the competition—Budapest finished in the top ten, placing ahead of some of the most popular European tourist destinations (including Lisbon, Paris, Amsterdam, Prague, Vienna, Barcelona and London). The Hungarian capital received a total of 17,745 votes. Last year, Wroclaw took first place in the competition, followed in second by Bilboa in Spain. The 10-year-old competition is geared towards helping travelers better see the world.

In 2018, Budapest received more than four million international visitors, and the number of domestic travelers also saw a sharp increase. Budapest’s spas alone attracted around 4,5 million visitors last year. The city has also been named the 2019 European Capital of Sport.
