The Hungarian capital is to host the European finals of the biennial world chef championship Bocuse d’Or between 9 and 11 May 2016 under an agreement signed today in Budapest’s New York coffee house.

Budapest beat Vienna, London and the Polish city of Lodz in the race to host the famous chef championship, which is to see chefs and their teams from twenty countries taking part in the event. In an unparalleled move, the Hungarian cabinet passed a government resolution to secure the funding necessary to organise the event, which is expected to boost tourism and promote the country through a multitude of appearances in the international press. It is considered almost the only chef championship acclaimed for its professionality by the entire gastronomy community.

Zoltán Hamvas, head of the Hungarian Bocuse d’Or Academy, said that major challenges facing organise include the contruction of ten Michelin Star-standard restaurants at Budapest’s Hungexpo exhibition centre, the venue which is to host the event, and sourcing ingredients.

The Bocuse d’Or International chef championship has been held since 1987. The championship saw its first Hungarian participant compete four years ago – Tamás Széll and his team came tenth in the international field at the time and this year, fellow Hungarian Gábor Molnár finished in thirteenth place.
