MSZP Submits Signature Drive on ‘Fidesz Colonisation’ of Lakes

MTI-Hungary Today 2020.07.28.

The Socialist party (MSZP) on Tuesday submitted a signature drive to the National Election Office (NVI), aimed to stop what the party calls the “colonisation of Lake Balaton, Lake Velence and others by [ruling] Fidesz”.

Party head Bertalan Tóth told a press conference held in front of the NVI’s offices that the party is initiating a referendum on three issues.

First, they “would like to make it possible to bathe in Lake Balaton for free”, Tóth said, referring to a question on preserving free beaches along the lake.

The drive also aims to prevent the sale of public beaches to government-connected players, and to stop alterations on public beaches so that they cannot be shut down to build apartment houses, Tóth said.

Party board head Ágnes Kunhalmi said the party was working to preserve people’s access to free beaches while allowing developments to go forward.
