According to entertainment news site Deadline, online streaming service Netflix has acquired exclusive North American rights to On Body and Soul, a romantic drama by Hungarian director Ildikó Enyedi that is Hungary’s official selection for the Academy Awards’ foreign-language film category.
On Body and Soul will have its US premiere on November 12th, at the American Film Institute (AFI) Fest in Hollywood, while its North American premiere took place at the Toronto Film Festival. Netflix will release the film on February 21st, 2018.
In addition to North America, it will be also available through Netflix in Latin America, with the exception of Brazil; the Middle East (with the exception of Israel and Turkey), South Africa, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Mongolia.
On top of being Hungary’s official pick for this year’s Oscars, Enyedi’s film has been critically well-received worldwide. Earlier this year, it won the Golden Bear, the highest award of the Berlin International Festival, as well as the top prize at the Sydney Film Festival (as Deadline notes, Enyedi’s win in Australia made her “the first woman and the first Hungarian” to win the Sydney Film Prize). In addition, last week On Body and Soul was nominated for four separate European film Awards, a record for a Hungarian film.
Enyedi’s drama, which was produced with the support of the Hungarian National Film Fund, tells the story of two people working at a slaughterhouse in Budapest who discover that they have the same dreams. They then attempt to make these dreams a reality. In her description of the film, Enyedi explained that the main characters’
common world of dreams is airy, natural, and bursting with free-flowing emotions. Trees, snow, wind. They are gentle and passionate simultaneously. It is a place where we can recognize ourselves.
