Despite the chances and expectations, only goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi saved the Hungarian national football team from another defeat in last night’s friendly in Brest, Belarus.
Belarus scored the opener only two minutes before Ferencváros forward, Roland Varga managed to equalize for Hungary, 1-1 turning out to be the final result. One of German Bundesliga’s best goalkeepers, Péter Gulácsi helped Hungary to avoid its third defeat in a row as Belarus had the upper hand during the whole game. In addition, following an unfortunate tackle, captain Balázs Dzsudzsák had to go off the pitch due to an injury; he will probably miss the next game.

Following two home defeats in March, –a humiliating one against Kazakhstan and an acceptable one against Scotland- this was the third match of the year and the third game with the new national coach, the Belgian Georges Leekens, who was appointed to the position last year. Even though, national football team has scarcely shown any encouraging elements during the game, Leekens was optimistic after the game, experts and fans are however rather depressed and pessimistic ahead of this autumn’s UEFA Nations League games.
National team’s next friendly is expected to be an even more difficult one, as on Saturday, Hungary faces World Cup participant Australia in Budapest’s Groupama Arena.
