Prime Minister Viktor Orbán took part in a video conference in preparation for this week’s European Council meeting. The summit’s agenda includes the war in Ukraine and economic issues regarding European competitiveness, the state of the internal market, and energy.

Charles Michel, President of the European Council, and the prime ministers of Greece, Slovenia, Slovakia, and Latvia attended the video conference with Viktor Orbán.

During the video conference, Orbán said that Hungary belongs to the peace camp, and therefore he continues to call for an immediate ceasefire and the start of peace talks. He emphasized that

Ukraine, as a candidate for EU membership, must not ignore the rights of minorities living on its territory, including Hungarians.

The prime minister stressed that in world trade matters Hungary is not in favor of blocs, but of connectivity.

In his invitation letter, Charles Michel wrote that the EU has been working on delivering more ammunition to Ukraine. “Our aim is to provide Ukraine with 1 million rounds of ammunition within the next 12 months, and to ensure adequate funding,” he wrote. On Monday, Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó categorically ruled out sending ammunition to Ukraine either from Hungary’s own reserves or via joint EU procurement, but said that Hungary will not stop other member states from doing what they want and resorted to “constructive abstention” in the vote.
