Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky attended a meeting of European Union defense ministers in Stockholm on Wednesday and held talks about Sweden’s and Finland’s NATO accession.

The ministry revealed in a statement that the war in Ukraine was the main topic of the meeting. In his speech, the minister outlined Hungary’s unchanged and clear position that it will not contribute to the continuation and escalation of the war, neither with ammunition nor with lethal weapons.

Hungary’s aim is to stay out of the war,”

Szalay-Bobrovniczky stressed.

Another important topic of the meeting was the development of the defense industry. In this context, he underscored that Hungary is striving to rebuild the defense industry, which was dismantled by left-wing governments in the past, and to join the European defense industry bloodstream in the coming years.

The minister held bilateral talks with Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson, and Finnish Defence Minister Antti Kaikkonen. Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky stressed that both meetings focused on the ratification of NATO accession. He assured his partners that the Hungarian government had supported their countries’ accession from the very beginning, but that Hungary had been the target of regrettably untrue and false accusations from politicians in both countries in recent years.

Hungary deserves more respect, and therefore we would like to be able to engage in political dialogue as partners and trusting allies once the ratification process is completed,”

he said.

As there was no consensus in the ruling Fidesz and KDNP parties to support the accession of the two countries, parliamentary delegations visited the Swedish and Finnish capitals in recent days.
