Speaking to Croatian news channel N1, Péter Szijjártó described the ongoing negotiations between Hungary and the European Union on EU funds as a ‘frustrating situation.’

The minister said that the freezing of funds does not pose a problem for the Hungarian budget, citing last year’s economic growth of almost five percent and the high number of investments.

In the case of EU funds, it is a question of principle, because these are not donations of a humanitarian nature, but are generated by the performance of the people of Europe, including the Hungarian people,

the minister said. He added that it was unacceptable that some European funds were not given to Hungary, refused for political reasons.

Szijjártó said the reason for the conflict is that Brussels does not like the way the Hungarian government is governing the country, that it opposes federalism and stands up for national competencies.

We are a right-wing, patriotic, Christian government that goes completely against the mainstream and Brussels cannot digest that,”

Szijjártó said. “They want us to fail. This is what they wanted during the last elections,” he added.

Asked whether Hungary’s strong support for the Republika Srpska in Bosnia has a stabilizing effect on the region, the foreign minister stressed that Hungary has very good, strategically friendly relations with Serbia and considers the stability of the Western Balkans essential, which is why it supports, for example, the acceleration of the EU enlargement process.
