ukraine war

The war in Ukraine cannot be won “by any reasonable calculation,” which is why a ceasefire is needed as soon as possible, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán stated on public Kossuth Radio on Friday morning.

Viktor Orbán stressed that Russia cannot win the war because the West is mobilizing so much arms, energy, and money behind Ukraine that it is “unlikely by human reckoning” to win an open military conflict against such force. He added that the reverse is also true, and that anyone who thinks Russia, a nuclear power, can be beaten, is wrong.

On the one-year anniversary of the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war, the prime minister also stressed that apart from the loss of lives and unimaginable amounts of lost value, what makes the situation really difficult to manage is the lack of clarity about the war’s objective.

In a war when there is a lack of clarity about the objectives of the war, it is very easy to get lost because there is nothing to measure the decisions that one makes at the expense of one’s own nation and one’s own citizens,”

Orbán said. He added that Ukraine is defending its freedom because it was attacked, and wants to avert the consequences of aggression against it, but it is not clear what exactly that means.

The reason for the drift into war is not only that “we in the West made the wrong decision” when we elevated the conflict from a localized one to a pan-European war, but we also made the mistake of not clarifying for ourselves where the limits of assistance to Ukraine are,” Orbán continued, noting that instead, all EU documents say “however long it takes, however much it costs.”

The prime minister said that the Europeans will continue to drift towards war, and it will not be long before the Hungarian public will hear proposals for peacekeeping forces or some kind of military troops on Ukrainian territory.

At the same time, he said that

NATO, of which Hungary is a member, is a defense alliance, not a war alliance, and there is no clause in its statute that gives the organization the right or obliges member states to take part in military actions aimed at a joint attack on a non-NATO member state.

Hungarian President Katalin Novák posted a video message on Twitter. “We, Hungarians wish that the road to a just peace may open,” she stressed.
