Romanians Snap Up Cheap Houses in Hungarian Border Regions

Hungary Today 2023.02.15.

As reported by Romanian news channel Digi24, that in Romania a two-room, 60-square-meter apartment costs almost 100,000 euros, in the eastern part of Hungary, close to the Romanian border, prices for houses start from 10,000 euros. Because of the significantly cheaper environment, many Romanians are choosing to buy property in Hungary.

According to the Romanian channel, the strong interest from Romanians is not surprising, as in Romania it is difficult for the average person to buy a house without a substantial loan. In eastern Hungary on the other hand, there are houses for sale in good condition, but prices are significantly lower than in Romania, or even in central or western Hungary.

Hungarian owners often choose to sell their property in the eastern region because it can be difficult to find a good job there. Therefore, they often move to big cities, leaving their former homes behind.

This is a good thing for Romanians, who can get from Hungarian settlements near the Hungarian-Romanian border to Romania very quickly, so daily commuting is not a problem.

A Romanian real estate expert, Bogdan Holocan, says that he knows of at least 300 houses in Hungary near the border that were bought by Romanians last year. It appears that one of the most popular settlement for Romanians is Battonya, where the Romanian community already has a school, a kindergarten, and a community center.
