In 2022, National Football Teams Performed beyond Expectations

Dániel Deme 2023.02.07.

According to Sándor Csányi, president of the Hungarian Football Association (MLSZ), the national team performed beyond expectations in many respects last year, and the sports leader hopes that the conscious building of the national team will continue under the leadership of Marco Rossi.

“We almost managed to win our group in Division A of the Nations League, and if we had not lost in Albania, we would have had a good chance of qualifying for the World Cup,” he said. “In addition to all this, we have eight new players, seven of them youngsters, which shows that the national team has a future.

It should be added that key players were missing from the squad on several occasions, but those who replaced them did a great job -“,

Csányi said.

Commenting on the World Cup in Qatar in December, the sports director said the event had been a success, and said it was important to organize World Cups not just in Europe and South America, where the sport is more developed.

Commenting on the 16 European participants in the next 48-team World Cup, Csányi said that so far, more than 40 percent of the teams in the tournament have been European, and in the future this will be reduced to 33 percent, which is fairer. It should be noted that the sport is also developing in Asia and Africa, and these continents would like to see more teams in the World Cup. He added that the 16 European teams would be “able to represent the continent’s football.”

The MLSZ president also said that it would be a “tremendous experience” if Ferencváros qualified for the final of the Europa League, held on May 31 at Puskás Arena. He stressed that it was also important for such events to be successful because the association has not made it a secret that its goal is to bid to host the Champions League final. He said that the next possible final is in 2026, and that Budapest is one of UEFA’s favorite venues because of the success of the events it has hosted in recent years.

Speaking about the domestic leagues, the MLSZ president said that the OTP Bank League “has sharp matches, all of them important, and you can see good quality ones.” He stressed that the proportion of young players is growing more slowly than expected, from just over five per cent to eight percent.

The sports director also sees the introduction of the video-assisted refereeing (VAR) system as a step forward, and called the Nations League a “huge success.”
