The National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH) is concerned that ten to fifteen-year-old teenagers spend an average of two hours on the internet, including on TikTok, on weekdays and almost three hours on weekends, the authority revealed on Monday, presenting research results.

According to the statement, cited by the public media, the NMHH and the Association of Hungarian Electronic Broadcasters (MEME) conducted a survey last autumn to find out consumption habits related to the use of digital devices and different media content.

They reported that

the use of different devices and platforms is changing and shifting towards new technology more rapidly in children’s media consumption than in older age groups.

It was found that in the majority of families surveyed, a significant proportion of children receive their first smartphone when they enter 5th grade.

The data shows that internet use and online games are hardly ever talked about in pre-school, with traditional games still dominating. The almost exclusive purpose of internet use is for children to watch their favorite cartoons, mainly on YouTube. Online games are already appearing for primary school children, but still under relatively strong parental supervision.

Social media is “booming” among 10 to 15-year-olds, with the main activity of surfing the internet being checking Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok profiles, posting, and messaging on Messenger.
