The deterioration of eastern-western cooperation is the worst possible news for Central Europe, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó said at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Tuesday.

He stressed that it would be in the fundamental national security and economic interests of Hungary and the Central European region as a whole to establish pragmatic cooperation between East and West based on mutual respect and mutual benefits.

The minister pointed out that this was largely a realistic scenario until the end of 2021, but by the beginning of last year it had become increasingly clear that there would be a break in the relationship, which was the worst possible news for the region.

Confrontation between geopolitical blocs is always bad for those who are geographically located between two blocs,”

he warned, citing the Cold War as an example.

On the downside of globalization, he noted that it had been used by the major powers as a means of “aggressively spreading their political narrative” around the world, and in doing so, had heavily stigmatized dissent from the international mainstream.

The government will be able to announce several hundred billion forints of new investments in the next period, which will surely break the investment record in Hungary this year too, Péter Szijjártó said after meeting with representatives of several large companies on the sidelines of the forum.

The minister met with the heads of Coca-Cola, LEGO, Apollo Tyres, AstraZeneca, Dell Technologies and Greenlabs, and said that the vast majority of these companies have some investment in Hungary and are planning to invest in new ones.
