Next year Hungary will host one of the world’s biggest sporting events: the World Athletics Championships. The event will take place at the new National Athletics Center between August 19 and 27. But alongside the Athletics World Championships, Hungary will also host a major football match and a Formula 1 race, among others.
Often called the queen of sports, the Athletics World Championships is generally regarded as the third biggest and most important sporting event after the Olympics and the football World Cup. Athletes from more than 200 countries are expected to compete in Budapest.
Meanwhile, another highlight in Hungary in 2023 will be the hosting of the final of the Europa League at Puskás Arena in Budapest on May 31.
In addition, there will be a Grand Prix and a World Cup in fencing events, a world championship in kayak canoeing, the World Karate Championships in October in Hungary, and the European Rally Championship will return to Nyíregyháza after a year’s absence.
And in July, the last stop of the International Wrestling Federation’s ranking series will be in the Hungarian capital. Also in July, the Gyulai István Memorial Hungarian Athletics Grand Prix will be held again, while the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix will take place at the end of that month.
2023 is also a key Olympic year, with qualification events in all sports for the 2024 Games in Paris, with most of the quotas to be won next year.
