Hungary and Greece played a friendly match on Sunday evening, ending in a victory for Hungary. Former team captain Balázs Dzsudzsák, who now boasts the title of the most capped footballer in the history of the Hungarian national team, said goodbye to the team.

Balázs Dzsudzsák has been selected 109 times for the national football team. The footballer made his debut for the national team on 2 July 2007 in Greece and now made his farewell appearance against Greece as well.

At a previous press conference, the player said that the highlight of his national team career was scoring two goals in the group match against eventual winners Portugal, which ended 3-3 at the 2016 European Championship. Balázs Dzsudzsák last played for Hungary in 2019.

Again I got an incredible emotional boost from the national team, which managed to win the match in the last minute. Thank you, I am very proud of them,”

said Dzsudzsák, who also received a commemorative plaque from his teammates. He added that with this victory they had put the cherry on the top of his career.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán also congratulated the former captain of the team for being the most capped footballer.

National team captain Marco Rossi was particularly pleased that Balázs Dzsudzsák was able to bid farewell to the Hungarian team: “When he thinks back on his 109th national team cap, he will remember a winning match. This meeting was not a gift. What he has put on the table for the Hungarian national team in his career has earned him the respect he deserves from me. Nobody put pressure on me to call him in,” said the Italian manager.

The Hungarian player was also praised by the coach of the Greek national team, who said that Balázs Dzsudzsák could be a role model for the youngsters. “I have not managed to put on the jersey so many times. He is a fantastic player who can serve as a role model for young footballers with his long career,” the manager said at a press conference on Saturday.

The friendly match started with a goal for Hungary, but later Greece equalized thanks to a penalty. In the final minutes however, Hungary regained the lead through a free kick by the recently returned Zsolt Kalmár, and the final score was 2-1 in Hungary’s favor.
