The expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant is in Hungary’s national strategic and national security interests at the same time, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade wrote on his Facebook page.
Péter Szijjártó said that the war in Ukraine and the failure of Brussels’ sanctions policy have created a global energy crisis, which “will be with us in the long term”. Therefore, the countries that will be able to be strong in the future are those that will be able to produce a large part of the energy they use themselves.
“To put it mildly, Hungary is not rich in mineral resources, so in our case nuclear energy will be able to ensure our independence from the completely senseless changes in the international energy market and skyrocketing energy prices,” the minister wrote.
“The expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant is in our national strategic and national security interests. So far, we have managed to prevent Brussels from imposing sanctions on our nuclear developments, and we will continue to do so in the future,” Szijjártó added.
The minister said that on Thursday in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, he and Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev reviewed the status of the project and agreed on the steps to be taken in the coming weeks to ensure that two new Paks units could be completed by the end of the decade.
