Hungary Rejects Joint EU Borrowing to Aid Ukraine

MTI-Hungary Today 2022.11.07.

Hungary is ready to continue its financial support for Ukraine on a bilateral basis, but will under no circumstances agree to another joint EU borrowing for this purpose, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said at a meeting in Sofia.

Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó welcomed the fact that the EU is preparing a new aid package for Ukraine. Speaking at the meeting of the Central European Initiative, foreign ministers in Sofia on Monday, he reminded that Hungary has been helping neighboring Ukraine in various ways for much longer than those who now present themselves as the country’s “best friends”.

In his speech, Szijjártó pointed out that the government has spent hundreds of millions of euros to support health, education, cultural institutions, and churches in Ukraine, and that Hungary had been doing its part even before the war broke out.

We are ready to continue financial support on a bilateral basis, on the basis of a bilateral agreement between Ukraine and Hungary. But we will certainly not support any kind of joint EU borrowing in this field,

he said. “Why? Because we have already done it once. We supported joint borrowing during the coronavirus epidemic, and that was more than enough,” Szijjártó said.

The European Commission is proposing a 1.5 billion euros a month financial assistance package to cover Ukraine’s financing needs for next year, with a legislative initiative expected to be presented this week.
