Fidesz MEP Criticizes Partisan EP Mission

The European Parliament’s cultural committee is expected to visit Hungary in November, yet according to Fidesz MEP Tamás Deutsch, their report is doomed to be biased because their scheduled program is one-sided.

Tamás Deutsch, the head of the Fidesz delegation in the European Parliament, wrote a letter to German MEP Sabine Verheyen, the chair of the EP’s Committee on Culture and Education (CULT) regarding their upcoming fact-finding visit to Hungary.

According to Deutsch, the final program of the visit between November 2-4 is “painfully one-sided,” despite the fact that Fidesz MEP Andrea Bocskor and other representatives have “recommended dozens of institutions and individuals.” “It is regrettable and incomprehensible that the committee has almost completely ignored these recommendations,” he added.

“As a result, a slanted program was adopted, with a glaring imbalance in favor of opposition, left-wing and liberal political figures, activists, institutions, journalists, and NGOs critical of the government,”

Tamás Deutsch wrote.

The Fidesz MEP added that a delegation can only fulfill its role as a fact-finder if it examines the issues concerning the mission from numerous viewpoints and selects elements of the program from the widest possible pool.

Alongside some two dozen “fiercely anti-government, left-wing and liberal politicians, civil activists, journalists, and cultural sector workers,” the visit will only include a few government representatives, completely ignoring representatives of conservative and Christian democratic actors, and this means that it cannot give a credible, objective, or complete picture of the reality, Deutsch explained.
