Scholarship for Young Christians from Around the World

MTI-Hungary Today 2022.10.21.

At a scholarship ceremony, State Secretary Tristan Azbej stressed the importance of helping persecuted Christians and assisting them to thrive in their homeland.

Hungary wants to support all communities in need around the world, not only Christians, but they hold a special place in the hearts of Hungarians, Tristan Azbej, the state secretary responsible for programs to help persecuted Christians, said in Budapest on Thursday, MTI reported.

Addressing the opening ceremony of the annual scholarship program for Christian youth, he said that the Hungarian people are compassionate and show solidarity- this comes from the country’s history. Azbej recalled that his grandparents’ generation had lived through world wars and his parents’ generation had lived through an anti-clerical, anti-religious, and anti-Christian, communist dictatorship.

Although Hungary is neither the largest nor the richest country in the world, its citizens are willing to give, said Azbej, adding that the government decided to launch the scholarship program for Christian youth from all over the world, including Africa.

“Christianity is the most persecuted religion in the world. More than 300 million Christians are persecuted and discriminated against because of their faith,” Azbej stated. Speaking to the new scholarship holders who arrived in Hungary, he said they had the chance to contribute to the prosperity of their country. “That is why the program was launched,” he said.
