The countries of the world must cooperate in the UN to bring about a ceasefire and peace in Ukraine as soon as possible, according to Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó. He argued against new EU sanctions.
“The world should use the UN General Assembly to promote peace in Ukraine, and the Hungarian government will continue to advocate this position throughout the week,” Péter Szijjártó, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said at the session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Monday.
Szijjártó also suggested to his EU partners that were present that they should put aside proposals that escalate the war, deepen the conflict, and exacerbate the situation, and finally start thinking about how peace can be achieved in Ukraine.
“It is very illuminating to step out of the European bubble, because it becomes immediately clear that the vision of war that Brussels has been pushing is not shared in most places in the world,”
Szijjártó wrote later on Facebook.
The Minister also spoke out against new EU sanctions. “Europe is suffering more than Russia from the restrictions imposed in response to the war in Ukraine, so the eighth package of sanctions should be forgotten, as it would only deepen the difficulties,” he explained.
“We Hungarians are interested in bringing the war in our neighborhood to an end as soon as possible. Peace is the solution to all the problems and serious challenges facing Hungary, Europe, and now the whole world,” he stressed.
According to Szijjártó, peace talks are needed as soon as possible, and a ceasefire is needed before that, and there is no better forum than the UN to discuss these. “Everyone is present at the UN, where all difficult issues can be discussed, and where the leaders of countries that are even at war with each other are present at the same time,” he said.
