In five years, Hungarians have used nine times as many gigabytes of internet: they are browsing more and more, video chatting, and enjoying streamed media in higher resolution, according to the Communications Directorate of the National Media and Infocommunications Authority (NMHH).
In recent years, the pace of technological development has become so rapid that it is almost mind-boggling. However, the biggest development of the 2000s was certainly the emergence of the Internet, which has now become an almost indispensable part of people’s daily lives.
Life would not be the same without mobile phones, which can now be used not only for calling and messaging, but also for enjoying the Internet at one’s leisure. This means that you can stream programs, films, and TV series on your device, make video calls with friends, and exchange messages over the internet through a variety of platforms.
Large touchscreens have allowed us to get away from clunky desktops and laptops and enjoy the internet. The experience of mobility has been made possible by the accelerating take-up of mobile internet services,” said the NMHH. They added that
mobile internet use is becoming increasingly popular, as can be seen from the analysis of traffic data collected from mobile operators.
While almost five million SIM cards generated online data traffic in 2016, by 2021, the number had risen to over seben million, accounting for three quarters of all SIM cards.
The volume of mobile data traded per SIM card has increased even more sharply, from 0.8 gigabytes in 2016 to more than nine times that in 2021, at 7.5 gigabytes. This is not only because more and more people are using mobile internet, but also because they are using it more intensively, browsing for longer periods, consuming streamed media, enjoying content in higher resolution, or watching videos, according to the statement0.
In 2016, 38% of the population aged 14 and over used mobile internet only, but by 2021 this had risen to 67%, or around 5.6 million people in the country.
It is important to add that there are many users whose current devices are not suitable for internet use. But as devices continue to innovate, the pool of mobile internet users is expected to grow even further.
