“School to Success” for Refugee Children

A Hungarian foundation is helping children fleeing the war in Ukraine to integrate into the Hungarian education system.

The Dorkász Ministries is organizing a catch-up program for refugee children from Ukraine who are staying at the foundation’s campsite in Debrecen, the director of the organization, Ábel Lukács Kiss, told Hungarian news agency MTI on Monday.

The director said that refugee children have fallen far behind in their studies due to the war, the epidemic, and poverty. The program’s mission is to provide displaced school-age children with the basic skills they need to continue their education as soon as possible.

This is the aim of the UNICEF-supported Dorkász School to Success pedagogical program, which will start in September, he explained. Five classrooms will be set up at the campsite, with full-time teachers. The small group sessions will include literacy and reading, as well as other alternative education methods. According to Ábel Lukács Kiss, music, dance, and sports will provide children with a complex skill development program.

The majority of those arriving from Transcarpathia do not want to go back, they would like to start a new life in Hungary. This is why it is particularly important to integrate children fleeing the war into the Hungarian education system, he added.
