A drought is currently affecting large parts of Hungary, the National Meteorological Service said in a Facebook post on Saturday, noting that long dry spells are becoming more frequent, with hotter summers and more intense heat waves.
According to the service, after last year’s lack of rain the drought continued throughout 2022. The situation is worse in central parts of the Great Plain region and areas east of the River Tisza.
The meteorological service also shared a study showing that six months of precipitation in the eastern part of the Danube was generally below 200 millimeters, while in the central and Transdanubian parts of the Great Plain, it was below 120 millimeters in large areas, which is only about half the region’s normal value.
The service added that on average in Hungary, there are drier and more rainy periods cyclically changing every three years. In addition, there are also a number of consecutive years of persistent drought and rainfall.
Hungary’s precipitation patterns are highly variable in space and time, the study highlighted. Over the past century, cyclical dry periods, lasting for years, have been common.
Occasional droughts are part of Hungary’s climate, but in recent decades summers have become significantly hotter and heat waves more frequent and more intensive, the Meteorological Service highlighted.
