Bucha Massacre: Commemoration in Front of Russian Embassy in Budapest to Call Attention to War Crimes

Tamás Vaski 2022.04.08.

Hundreds of demonstrators took part in the protest held in front of the Russian Embassy in Budapest Thursday evening, calling attention to the murder of innocent civilians in Ukraine. (According to Ukraine, Russian soldiers committed the war crimes while withdrawing. The Kremlin has denied such accusations.) The event, organized by the Ukrainian Jednyst (Unity) Association in Budapest, had protesters lying on the ground with their hands tied behind their backs, as the murdered citizens of Bucha appeared to be in the video evidence of the killings.

Jednyst shared photos of Thursday’s demonstration on its Facebook page, writing “no to genocide against the Ukrainian people!”

"People of Europe thought it would happen ‘never again.’ But it is happening. The genocide of Ukrainian people is taking place now in Mariupol," reads a post from the Embassy of Ukraine in Budapest.Continue reading

The organization wrote that the intention of the event was to commemorate the civilian casualties in Bucha, Irpin, and small towns north of Kyiv.

The only goal of the Russian army is to eliminate the population of Ukraine,”

they wrote, adding that “the world needs to know the truth about the death of every innocent person, every atrocity committed by the Russian aggressor.”

Ukraine’s recent counterattack against retreating Russian forces from multiple parts of Ukraine has revealed civilian casualties that have caught the attention of the international community. Photos and videos in Bucha show dozens if not hundreds of murdered civilians on the streets, some of them appearing to have been shot in the back of the head after their hands were tied.

Bucha is not the only instance where civilians have been targeted by Russian soldiers. During the siege of Mariupol, a theater sheltering civilians marked with the Russian word “children,” was shelled by Russian artillery. On a road previously occupied by Russians outside Kyiv, Ukrainian drone footage released by the Bugatti unit of Territorial Defence shows a civilian surrendering to Russian forces before being shot and killed.
