Prime Minister Viktor Orbán accused the united opposition of handling voters’ data in a way that amounted to “massive election fraud”.
“This is a serious matter,” the president of Fidesz told the state media. He insisted that the opposition partes were unlawfully obtaining the personal data of “hundreds of thousands” and sending them political messages without their consent.
This is not only election fraud but concerns issues around freedom, too,”
Orbán said said, adding that the “serious violation” called for “a thorough investigation”.
Prior to this, pro-Fidesz daily Magyar Nemzet reported that more than 1 million Hungarian voters received opposition campaign messages on their phones. Furthermore, according to Magyar Nemzet, voters were reached using an illegal database, which raises various legal concerns. The six-party opposition alliance denied any involvement, calling the news a coordinated attack from the Pro-Fidesz media.
Orbán said an “unnatural alliance” had been set up in which “the fascist wing and the communist wing have both preserved their independence” within the opposition. The parties abandoned “important moral and political standards and their self-identity,” he said. “An alliance has been created with the sole purpose of seizing power,” he added.
