Budapest City Hall Displays Ukrainian Flag in Solidarity

Hungary Today 2022.02.24.

The opposition-led Budapest Assembly has hung out the Ukrainian flag on the capital’s City Hall “to stand for the Ukrainian people and Ukraine,” mayor Gergely Karácsony wrote on social media Wednesday afternoon, before Thursday morning’s Russian attack.

“Earlier, together with several of my fellow European mayors, I expressed my solidarity with the Mayor of Kyiv, and yesterday with the Mayor of Beregszász [Berehovo], the sister city of Budapest. In Transcarpathia, we have many Hungarian-speaking compatriots, including young people, who are waiting, terrified that they will be conscripted.” The Párbeszéd politician also argues that,

It is still incomprehensible that such barbarism can happen not so far away, here in our neighborhood. As part of the European community, we must stand up for Ukraine’s sovereignty and protest most strongly against Putin’s actions.”

The flag of Ukraine was placed close to the Szekler flag.
