Slovak Census: Almost Half a Million People Declare Themselves to be Hungarians

The Slovak Statistical Office (SÚSR) has published the nationality data from last year’s census, showing that in total, 465,000 people identify themselves as Hungarians in the country.

In the 2021 census, the number of Slovakian citizens declaring themselves to be of Hungarian nationality was 422,000.

However, according to Hungarian-language Slovak daily Új Szó, another 34,000 people also ticked Hungarian in the second question on nationality, i.e. whether they “declare themselves as belonging to other nationalities.”

This means the number of people declaring themselves to be of Hungarian nationality in Slovakia has decreased by about 36,000 in the past ten years, Hungarian state news agency MTI reports, based on data released by SÚSR.

However, the latest statistics show that the rate of decline in the number of Hungarians living in Slovakia has slowed down over the past decade compared to the previous ten years. Between 2001 and 2011, the number of Hungarians in Slovakia fell by more than 60,000, which is a 1.2 percent decrease compared to the total population.
