During the pandemic it was culture, scientific achievements, art and the work of scientists that showed that Hungarians have not lost their ability to shape the future, President Janos Áder said at an awards ceremony on Friday, Hungary’s August 20 national holiday.
These outstanding achievements were what showed “that man’s most beautiful noble commitments also give meaning to times of struggle, regardless of their subject or field of specialisation”, the president said handing out state awards.
Áder said that fighting and the ability to adapt had been given new meaning over the past year and a half.
He said it was also important to give thanks at the ceremony for the research that went into the development of the Covid-19 vaccines, as well as the musical and theatrical performances offered to the public during the lockdown.
Áder said that though the award recipients were a diverse group, they were all “brave, wise, committed, and most importantly, patient enough to sow seeds again and again”.
Friday’s ceremony, held to recognize individuals who were to be awarded on the occasion of the March 15 national holiday, had been delayed because of the pandemic.
