Blue Ribbon Regatta, Europe’s Oldest Round Lake Competition Kicks Off – PHOTOS!

The 53rd Blue Ribbon (Kékszalag) Regatta, Europe’s oldest and most prestigious lake circumnavigation competition, began Thursday morning at the port of Balatonfüred.

The Blue Ribbon Regatta, also known as Kékszalag, is the oldest and one of the longest lake circumnavigation competitions in Europe, with the first race held back in 1934, originally once every two years (except in 1944 and 1946 because of the Second World War), and yearly since 2001.

Since its start, the sailing course has remained more or less the same: the start and finish lines are situated in Balatonfüred and sailors complete an approximately 160 km-long course around the lake.

Sailors have 48 hours to get around Lake Balaton, although the course record is only 7 hours 13 minutes.

From Balatonfüred, sailors make their way towards Siófok, the largest town along the southern shore, then cross the Tihany Strait to Keszthely at the southwest corner of Lake Balaton. From there, they head northeast again to return to the port of Balatonfüred once more.
