Budapest intends to spend EUR 48 million (15 billion HUF) on completely refurbishing and expanding several major bathhouses of the city. The reconstruction would affect six thermal baths, and is set to be completed between 2015 and 202, said István Tarlós.
The mayor of Budapest, during his announcement, also said that the upgrade will include Gellér, Palatinus, Paskál, Dagály, Csillaghegy and Pesterzsébet, and the costs of the refurbishment project will be covered by Budapest Gyógyfürdői es Hévizei, the company that runs the facilities, Tarlós told a press conference.
Thermal baths or spas in Budapest are popular tourist attractions as well as public comforts for the city’s residents. The city is often nicknamed ‘City of Baths’, and for a good reason. Hungary is a land of thermal springs, and Budapest remains the only capital city in the world that is rich in thermal waters with healing qualities.
Answering questions, István Tarlós also spoke about the planned reconstruction of Metro Line 3. The mayor, providing a status update on the project, said the tender for the project is ready and is expected to be announced within the next 2 to 3 weeks.
