65th Anniversary of Recsk Labour Camp Closure Marked

A commemoration was held on Saturday to mark the 65th anniversary of the closing of the Recsk labour camp, also known as the “Hungarian Gulag”, in northern Hungary.

Speaking about Recsk and the oppression of the Communist dictatorship is not just an opportunity we may avail of since 1990, it is not just something we owe to the one-time prisoners, it is a duty we have in the name of universal human values, said state secretary Bence Rétvari.

Some 1,500 people were imprisoned at the camp in Recsk between 1950 and 1953. The camp was shut down by Imre Nagy, Hungary’s prime minister, after the death of Stalin.
