A lucky Hungarian lottery player joined Hungary’s club of billionaires on Saturday evening as it was announced that the second-largest jackpot in the game’s Hungarian history had been won by a single player. This means that instead of being divided between a number of players, the HUF 5 billion sum will go to a single person.
The winning numbers drawn at the regular live television programme on Saturday evening were 18, 55, 56, 83 and 90. The jackpot had been amassing for 37 weeks, with nobod managing to pick the lucky five numbers out of a field of 90 since September 2014. The prize that has now been won by a mystery player is almost as high as the all-time record of HUF 5.1 billion taken in November 2003.
The present prize is the second-biggest since the modern form of lottery was launched in Hungary in early 1957. The millions of lottery tickets sold each week by the state firm Szerencsejáték Zrt. are an important contribution to the country’s national budget.
