37 Million Forints Raised for Family Who Lost Father in Dormitory Fire

On the 23rd of January, several stories of the dormitory in Ráday Street burnt down. The firefighters discovered the body of a 46-year-old man. Since the event, more than 37 million forints have been raised for his widow.

Police have determined that the fire was caused by arson committed by three young men. Most of the residents of the dormitory were students from the Károli Gáspár University of the Reformed Church and all made it out of safely.

According to Parokia.hu, Zoltán Farkas, a father-of-four, lost his life in the fire. He worked in Budapest part-time and studied Psychology at Eötvös Loránd University. He stayed in the dormitory a few days a week because of his studies.

The Hungarian Reformed Church transferred 3 million forints to the man’s widow ahead of the funeral. They then raised 37,5 million forints in a fundraiser.

Other fundraisers were organized to help those who lost their belongings in the fire. Eötvös Loránd University offered 60 placements in its dormitories to students affected by the fire.
