“Ice In The Air?” – Ice Tsunami Attacked The Shores Of Lake Balaton

Robert Velkey 2017.03.01.

Spring wind floods water, my darling, my darling” sounds the Hungarian folk song, but what if the spring wind deal with ice? This is called ice tsunami.

The Lake Balaton shined like a frozen wonderland this winter, and it was frozen enough to let people cross the great frozen lake on skates, sleighs, bobs, whatever. The winter is ended in Hungary and ice started to melt everywhere in the sunshine.

On the beginning of the Spring an unexpected and scary natural phenomenon happened at the lake. The melting ice met with the wind and it built up a 2-3 meters high ice-wall.

An interesting video has emerged of ice piling up on the shores of Lake Balaton in Hungary. The footage, captured in Vonyarcvashegy earlier this month, shows thick ice being pulled towards the banks of the lake and breaking into large shards.
