The World Press Photo exhibition opened on Thursday at the Hungarian National Museum. This year, 151 press photos are on display, selected by an international jury from 74,470 photographs by 4,315 photojournalists from 130 countries, with an increased focus on the coronavirus pandemic, Tamás Révész, the exhibition’s organiser, said.
László L. Simon, head of the Hungarian National Museum, noted that the museum was hosting the exhibition for the fourth time, adding that negotiations with the WPP were under way to continue the cooperation for another five years. The National Museum will “continue to be a basis and home to contemporary photography”, he added.
WPP curator Martha Echevarria said the main themes of the photographs on display were the Covid crisis, political protests and climate change. She said that her organisation had arranged for exhibitions in only 60 cities last year, as opposed to 110 in earlier times, adding that they were hoping to have taken the collection to 80-90 places by the end of this year.
The first World Press Photo exhibition was first organised by Dutch photographers in 1955. The exhibitions attract some 4 million visitors each year.
