Villány Red Wine Wins at Prestigious Competition

Hungary Today 2023.08.30.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon from Bodor Winery in Villány was chosen as Hungary’s best red wine out of almost 840 entries at one of the world’s most prestigious wine competitions, reports Origo.

Bodor Winery‘s 2016 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon has been named Hungary’s best red wine at the Winelovers Wine Awards 2023. Only four of the 839 lots competing at the blind tasting deserved the Grand Gold medal: three aszús (a sweet wine form the Tokaj region) and Bence Bodor’s red wine of Villány.

Fact

The aim of the Winelovers Wine Awards is to find the best wines of Central and Eastern Europe and promote them on the international market. The competition attracted wines from 14 countries and the jury of 65 wine experts and winemakers represented 19 countries.

To achieve 95 points in a wine competition like this and to be among the sweet aszús with a full-bodied Villány red wine is a great professional recognition.

For me it is an incentive and for consumers it is a guide, at a time when the consumption of red wine is declining worldwide and in Hungary. While drinking beer and cocktails is fun and always the same experience, with wine every vintage is a unique and unrepeatable adventure. Both in the making and the tasting,” says winemaker Bence Bodor, founder of Bodor Winery.

He believes that after the years of the COVID epidemic and the drastic increase in costs in recent years, it is time to draw attention once again to the great pleasure and gastronomic value of red wines and rosés from the Villány wine region. The support of both the catering industry and the general public is now needed to ensure that Hungarian wine producers can continue to produce wines of the highest quality and increasingly excellent vintages.

Fact

Bodor Winery was founded in the early 2000s by Bence Bodor. Today, he farms ten hectares of vineyards, mostly of his own planting, in the western part of the Villány wine region in southern Hungary, on the Diósviszló vineyard, with kékfrankos, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and cabernet franc grapes. It is partly due to the special microclimate of the vineyard and partly to the innovative yet extremely precise professional work of Bence Bodor that Bodor wines are regularly awarded prizes.

The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded with the Grand Gold Medal and the Grand Prix of Old Wine at the 29th Jakab-hegyalja Wine Competition last year, and with the Silver Medal at the 41st National Wine Competition.
