Universities to Appeal against EU Decision on Funding

Hungary Today 2023.05.10.

Six foundation universities have appealed to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) after the European Commission (EC) excluded Hungarian foundation universities from EU funding projects.

Last December, the European Commission had banned Hungarian higher education institutions run by public foundations from signing contracts to receive EU funding.

In practice, this concerns the Erasmus+ and Horizon programs.

According to the University of Debrecen, the EC’s decision goes against fundamental European values and is the result of a political war.

The ECJ said that the cases could be heard together and that a judgment could be handed down in 18 months. The Hungarian government has promised to reach an agreement with the EU on the blocked funds before then.
