Barbara Bene 2022.08.11.

The training of border hunters has begun, the National Police Headquarters (ORFK) announced on Wednesday on police.hu. During the four week, 180-hour training, students will acquire law enforcement, legal, shooting and tactical, border police, and border traffic control knowledge.

As part of the law enforcement training, the border guard trainees will learn about the legislation and internal standards required for their service, as well as the basic principles they must observe during their patrols. During the practical training, they learn the steps of stopping, searching persons, luggage and vehicles, as well as securing the scene and conducting lockdowns and searches.

Legal skills training will focus on basic human rights, criminal law, offense awareness, and various police standards.

In the shooting and action tactics training unit, students learn the techniques to be used for each type of action and take part in shooting theory and practice classes. In the border guard and border traffic control training unit, students will learn about the tasks of the border police branch.

According to ORFK, the contracted border guards will receive a gross monthly basic salary of HUF 300,000 from the first day of training, and the Standby Police will provide free lunch for the entire duration of the training and accommodation for non-residents. Recruitment and screening of candidates will continue.

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced in July that

the Hungarian government has decided to strengthen the country’s southern borders and to protect the security of Hungarians living there.

As a result, border hunter units will be set up as security in cooperation with the police. The Prime Minister signed the decree establishing the units July 9th.

The southern border of Hungary is under constant pressure due to illegal immigration. Because of this, in accordance with the government’s decision, authorities have started the reinforcement of the existing 165-kilometer security border barrier and the construction of the new border protection system in the Hoduna section, the Hungarian Prison Service told on Wednesday.

It said that the prison service is not only responsible for the production of fence elements and their assembly by prisoners, but also for the maintenance of the security border barrier and damage repairs.

They added that last year there were 2,181 cases of illegal migrants damaging the security fence, and so far this year there have been 1,528. The increasingly aggressive actions of illegal migrants – such as throwing stones, objects, threatening violence with sticks and machetes – have also justified further strengthening and improving the system.
