The Déryné Festival awaits the public with more than seventy free programs between July 19 and 23 in and around Sátoraljaújhely (a town in northern Hungary, along the Slovak border). The Déryné Company will present classical and read-aloud theater performances, children’s programs, folk dance performances, and the rock opera Stephen, the King (István, a király).
This year, for the first time, the festival will host the KultCamp, a cooperation between the KultUp project of the Déryné Program and the Rákóczi Association, which will bring 450 secondary school students from all over the country to Sátoraljaújhely in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county.
The Déryné Program aims to bring the experience of theater to those with a lack of access to culture.
The culmination of the program’s year-round activity is the Déryné Festival, which, through KultCamp, the mission of which is “the promotion of culture alongside talent and theater education for young people.”
According to a statement from Déryné’s program director, Márk Kis Domonkos, the camp has reached some 15,000 students in just five months since the KultUp project was launched, with community building playing an important role.
During the festival, visitors can encounter a wide variety of performances: from television productions on the big screen to puppet and reading theater for children and dance performances; everything is on offer. The famous rock opera Stephen, the King, which offers musical insight into the life of the state-founding Hungarian king, St. Stephen I, will also be performed.
In addition to theatrical programs, organizers are also putting a strong emphasis on music, as they have announced that the Csík Orchestra, the Budapest Jazz Orchestra, Kaláka, and the Bohemian Betyars, among others, will perform at the Ungvár Wine Terrace.
