University students in Hungary will be able to apply for Erasmus scholarships in the autumn semester like before, Tibor Navracsics, minister for regional development, said in Brussels on Wednesday after meeting EU commissioners Elisa Ferreira, Johannes Hahn, and Mariya Gabriel, MTI reports.
Navracsics told Hungarian journalists that he had asked the European Commission to send a letter to the Tempus Public Foundation, which coordinates international mobility applications, reassuring university students and authorities of EU member states that participation in the Eurasmus+ program would continue.
An agreement on this issue could be reached by the summer, he said, adding that funding for the Horizon Europe and Eurasmus+ programs would continue after 2024. Navracsics said that a letter of clarification had already been received from the EC, explaining to consortium partners and Hungarian universities that applications and participation in the Horizon Europe program could continue uninterrupted. “If no agreement is reached, it would only create a problem in the future,” he said.
Navracsics also discussed the rules under Hungary’s new public foundations model managing several universities. He said clarifying how soon these universities could be included in the Erasmus and Horizon Europe programs was essential. “We are now sending a consultative proposal to Brussels,” he said. Navracsics said that a dispute with the European Commission concerned the issue of conflict-of-interest rules about the membership of the governing boards of universities under the new model. “So far, we have not fully defined which positions are incompatible with board membership,” he added.
