New Generation of Gastronomy at Gourmet Festival

Hungary Today 2023.03.22.

The new “generation of gastronomy” will be the focus of this year’s Gourmet Festival, with more than 100 exhibitors, including around 50 restaurants, dozens of bakeries, street food, international cuisine, wines, champagnes, beers, and other drinks at Millenáris in Budapest from June 2 to 4.

This year’s Gourmet Festival will not focus on a specific food or ingredient: this time the focus will be on young people and with them innovation and new things, be it new trends, technologies, ingredients or even style, according to organizers.

Last year we focused on heritage, this year we are focusing on the future, as we can already see a new generation of chefs, pastry chefs, baristas and bartenders, who despite their youth, are representing their profession to a very high standard,”

said Richárd Nemes, Gourmet Festival’s chief organizer.

At this year’s festival, the new generation will be represented by young professionals such as Anett Béres, who went from being a self-taught pastry chef to becoming the pastry chef at the Michelin-starred Borkonyha and Textúra restaurants in Budapest; Richárd Csillag, the chef of Lokal47 in Kéthely, near Lake Balaton, who at the age of 21 has already taken part in one of the world’s most prestigious chef competitions; or Mátyás Huszár, who leads the team of Vasüzlet in Balatonfüred, described as the “most exciting new opening” on the northern shore of Lake Balaton.

Visitors can also meet Edina Makai, who studied philosophy and played drums in a band before becoming assistant chef at the Michelin-starred Salt restaurant in the capital; János Mizsei, chef at MÁK restaurant, who won the Michelin Guide Young Chef of the Year award last year; and Pál Tóth, chef at Alabárdos in Szeged, who used to have a punk band but now has his own cookbook.

The festival will also feature a workshop by guest caterer/writer/presenter Rozina Wossala, who will be giving a workshop on the Gourmet Academy stage. She has her own restaurant at the center of Budapest, next to the St. Stephen Basilica.

Alongside the exhibitors responsible for the range of gourmet food and drink, there will be a wide variety of activities, including professional demonstrations and performances that will bring together the culinary arts with literature, music, and even painting.
