Minorities in Ukraine not a Bilateral Issue, Deputy Speaker Says

Hungary has been condemning Russia’s military aggression against Ukraine since the outbreak of the war and stands by Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, said István Jakab, Deputy Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, on Monday in Prague at the opening day of the two-day conference of the EU’s national parliament presidents.

He pointed out that Hungary has so far provided more than 100 million euros in aid to Ukraine and is continuing the largest humanitarian aid operation in its history. Hungary has been continuously providing for Ukrainian refugees arriving in the country, with 4.8 million arrivals from Ukraine since the beginning of the war.

It is in Hungary’s national interest to have a sovereign, strong, democratic Ukraine that offers opportunities for its citizens, including the indigenous national communities living there, such as Hungarians, Bulgarians, Poles, and Romanians.

The recent events in Transcarpathia, the unjustified dismissal of Hungarian teachers, and the removal of Hungarian symbols are clear signs of a serious anti-Hungarian campaign in Ukraine,”

he said. “This is not only a bilateral problem, as Ukraine is an EU candidate country, and the protection of national minorities is a declared core value of the EU,” Jakab added.

When will the European Union recognize and protect the right to exist of the national communities in Ukraine in the same way as it recognizes and protects the right of the Ukrainian nation to exist?”

he asked.

“Hungary can only support Ukraine’s further integration rapprochement – whether towards NATO or the European Union – when the rights of the Hungarian national community in Ukraine, which existed until 2015, are restored”, the deputy speaker concluded.
