Ukrainian War: Hungarian Atlantic Council Calls on Russia to End Bloodshed

MTI-Hungary Today 2022.03.07.

The Hungarian Atlantic Council (MAT) has called on the Russian government to “immediately end the bloodshed” in Ukraine and engage in talks with Ukrainian representatives under peaceful circumstances.

In a statement, the board of the Hungarian Atlantic Council condemned the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine to a war, calling it a step in serious breach of international law which threatened the security of the transatlantic space. They said it viewed the fate of the refugees coming out of Ukraine with concern, adding that it would provide them all the help it could.

Fact

The Hungarian Atlantic Council was established in 1992 as a non-profit, non-governmental organization. Its original mission was to promote Hungary’s NATO accession and to contribute to the broadest possible acceptance of Euro-Atlantic principles and values in Hungarian society. After Hungary’s successful referendum and NATO accession in 1999, it was reorganized as a public benefit organization based on Hungarian legislation.

Hungarian Atlantic Council works to integrate Euro-Atlantic principles into Hungarian public life. Focusing on practical matters, it seeks to disseminate relevant knowledge and credible information.

The transatlantic community must use all peaceful means possible to compel the aggressor to return to the use of diplomacy and civilized talks, the Hungarian Atlantic Council said. It added that Kyiv should be encouraged to guarantee the collective rights of the millions in the country belonging to national minorities in line with European practices, including the unrestricted use of their mother tongue in all areas of life.
